Centurion’s best fails to save Green

A SPLENDID unbeaten century from Barnt Green opener James Ord failed to save Barnt Green from a seven-wicket Birmingham League Premier Division home defeat against Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Barnt Green chose to bat first and Ord took full advantage of having first use of the wicket by carrying his bat for 114.

He struggled for decent support with Tom Burton (27) the only other man to pass 20 as Green were restricted to 187-7 from their 55 overs.

Alex Blofield and Mike Barnard proved the most threatening bowlers for Shrewsbury, returning 3-53 and 3-40 respectively.

Early wickets were going to be key for the hosts if they were to force victory but Shrewsbury made a solid start to their reply and never looked back.

Blofield continued his fine afternoon by top scoring with 77 and with Ed Foster (43) and Edward Barnard (41no) also scoring well, they reached victory at 190-3 in the 49th over.

Stephen Bevan (2-58) and Ord (1-9) took the wickets to fall for Barnt Green who will hope to get back to winning ways when they visit Himley tomorrow.

BROMSGROVE paid a heavy price for a dramatic batting collapse as they fell to a seven-wicket Division One defeat at Dorridge on Saturday.

The visitors, who travel to Whitchurch tomorrow, started brightly after being put in to bat but after the third wicket fell with the total on 127 they fell away badly to 153ao.

Openers Ash Newdick and Adam Gailey put on 66 for the first wicket before Newdick became the first man to fall for 34 when caught by Matt McGillivary off Andy Stevenson (2-35).

Gailey (43) followed with the total one shy of three figures when offering a catch to Kasir Shah and becoming Stevenson’s second wicket.

There was still no sign of the collapse to come at that stage though as George Rhodes (40) and Jayden Levitt (20) continued to build the total.

But it was when Levitt became the first of four victims for Ali Ebad that the game changed.

The final seven batsmen contributed just four runs to the total, occupying only 36 deliveries as Shah (3-43) and Ebad went to work.

Dorridge opener Jonathan Webb then ensured there was few alarms for his side as he carried his bat for 90 with victory being achieved at 154-3 in the 42nd over.

Rhodes (2-30) and Mark Evenson (1-15) did strike for Bromsgrove but they were powerless to prevent the visitors suffering just a second defeat of the season.
