ANOTHER highlight of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Droitwich was the unveiling of a giant mural in the Netherwich Basin on Bank Holiday Monday (June 4).

Droitwich’s MP Peter Luff ‘encountered’ the Great White shark on a trip down the canal on the popular Pamela May canal boat to unveil the mural during the Diamond Jubilee festivities.

The celebration marked the end of a month-long effort by the Droitwich Arts Network to create a jointly-painted mural to be visible along the water from Vines Park.

Adults and children were invited to paint one of the squares and help the network complete the mammoth task of filling the huge 608sq ft ‘Extreme Fishing’ masterpiece which will mark the Jubilee and enhance the marina itself.

The artwork will also raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support and has been hung from a wall behind the Malvern Tyres depot until September.

Each of the 608 squares can be sponsored for a suggested donation price of £2 with all proceeds being donated to the charity.

Those who sponsor a square will have their names published in Droitwich Library where a list of the remaining available squares can also be obtained.

A plaque designed by network member Rosie Philpott describing the mural can be seen by the entrance to the landing stages at the western end of Vines Park.
