A bloomin right royal effort

GREEN-fingered Spa residents celebrated HM the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style by sprucing up their gardens for the Droitwich in Bloom competition.

Gardeners in Droitwich showed ingenuity and creativity and their efforts meant 15 gardens and allotments were open to the public over the packed weekend of events.

Despite the rain and competition from the national events on TV, some 60 keen gardeners braved the inclement conditions to look at the selection of interesting gardens.

For most gardens it was too early for many plants to be at their very best, but some, like Helel Tarlo’s garden, are in magnificent condition all year round.

A total of £300 was collected for St Richard’s Hospice and the winning gardens will be revealed by local gardening expert and head judge Reg Moule in the coming weeks.

The allotments which were put forward for entry into the competition will be judged on July 28 by Simon Berry from the Gardener’s Arms pub and restaurant.

The weekend also saw prizes handed out for the ‘Most Unusual Planter’ competition by Droitwich mayor Coun Anne Taft.

Esme Hughes, who teamed up with younger brother Flynn as her creative consultant, was declared the winner in the under

14s section.

Secret Garden florists, mother and daughter Emma and Poppy Everton, won the adult section and also the competition for the best decorated shop front.

Coun Taft presented the prizes of vouchers from Wilkinsons and bottle of wine from Tesco of Droitwich and vouchers from Webbs of Wychbold, plus certificates and special Jubilee medals provided by Droitwich Town Council.
