Plenty to celebrate at Bromsgrove School

IT has been a successful week for pupils at Bromsgrove Preparatory School following success in two major athletics competitions.

For the girls, 12-year-old Abigail Saker competed in the British Biathlon Championships where she recorded the fastest 1000m time of the day, with a lead of over six seconds.

She then swam over a second faster than at her previous attempt at Crystal Palace and won the Championship for her age group.

Pupils Kitty Luscombe, Nicol Green and Katie Morrice (all aged ten), also represented the School at the competition, with placings of 29th, 49th and 53rd respectively.

In addition to the Biathlon success, girls from the Prep School also competed in the County Clubs Track and Field competition.

There were some excellent performances and some County champions crowned, with Saker again proving her talent with first place in the 800m in a personal best time of 2-33, just two seconds off the school record.

Ellie Childs, 12, came second in 2-36 which was also a personal best for her. Childs was also second in the 200m in 30.8.

Eleven-year-old Elouise Brookes won the javelin, throwing over 18m and earning herself the County championship. To round off the successful day, Lauren Brown, 13, was also a County champion, winning the hurdles in 12.4.

The boys also proved their talents at the County championships. Dominic Gardner, 12, came fifth in the 100m with a personal best of 14.3, while Charlie Sapwell, 11, came sixth in the 800m in a personal best 2-40.

The champion of the day for the boys’ team was Zachary Jeacock, 11, who won the 100m in 13.5 seconds, making him the fastest pupil in the Prep School this year for all age groups, even though he is only in year six.

If that was not enough, Jeacock then came first in the 200m with a School record-breaking time of 28.4 - beating the previous record which had stood since 1984 - as well as finishing third in the long jump.

Head of Boys’ Games Gareth Jones said of Zachary’s victories: “For Zachary to have achieved the sprint double running against pupils in year seven is a great achievement indeed and highlights what a talented athlete he is.”
