AN INSPIRATIONAL Droitwich teenager will realise her Olympic dreams when she carries the torch through Fernhill Heath on May 24.

Sam Spencer was nominated by her proud parents Kate and Terry Spencer for her voluntary work with sporting groups and schools and at home, where she cares for her mum, who has MS.

And while the 18-year-old will not be carrying the torch through her home town, she is delighted with her selection which will help raise the profile of Fernhill Heath.

Sam told The Standard: "It's brilliant to be chosen and I am very excited. It's brilliant to think people think I deserve to do it and notice what I have done.

"Everyone is very impressed that I am getting to do it," she added.

Sam was one of the first 6,000 torchbearers across the country to be named to carry the flame on its tour around the UK.

The honour is in recognition of her kind-hearted community efforts which has seen her raise an estimated £30,000 through charity events.

The NEW College student has also completed around 700 hours of volunteering for local sports groups and schools over the last 18 months.

The teenager has been widely recognised for her efforts and was named Young Volunteer of the Year at the Sports Partnership Hereford and Worcestershire Annual Sports Awards last November.
