DROITWICH MP Peter Luff is set to saddle up this month to see the hazards faced by Spa cyclists in the centre of town.
The invitation to put pedal to the metal came from Droitwich resident David Terry who was spurred into action by a top national newspaper’s campaign.
The Times’s ‘Cities Fit for Cycling’ crusade calls on ministers, mayors and local authorities to build cities that are fit for cycling and features an eight-point manifesto.
As part of the campaign, the newspaper is calling on local residents to contact their MPs to get them to show their support and experience the hazards faced by cyclists on the road.
Mr Terry, a former college principal, said he and Mr Luff would take to the road in the coming weeks to highlight the issue.
“I am delighted that Mr Luff has agreed to back this campaign to make our towns and cities safer for cyclists, and especially that he has agreed to accompany me on a ride round the town.
“Given the enormously demanding and important job he has as minister responsible for ordering and securing the delivery of equipment for our armed services,
“I am impressed that he should have agreed to find time in his schedule to do this,” he added.
Mr Luff told The Standard: “Cycling is a healthy and enjoyable way of getting around, but sadly it has become very dangerous
on modern roads.
“The Times campaign has triggered this welcome national debate, but I’m sorry that campaign seems to be limited to cities.
“Our towns and rural roads will also often need to be improved to make cycling safer. If there are things that we can do locally
to encourage more safe cycling, I will do all I can to make it happen,” he added. Visit www.thetimes.co.uk/CycleSafe for more information on the campaign.
