DROITWICH’s historic canals were given the royal seal of approval yesterday (Thursday) as the Earl of Wessex took to the water during his visit to the town.

The iconic Pamela May trip boat brought HRH into the town and marked a notable moment in the history of the newly formed Droitwich Waterways (PM) Trust.

Formed, following the opening of the canals in July, the Trust aims to promote and protect the town’s waterways and were recognised by the Earl’s visit.

A number of volunteer’s worked tirelessly to ensure the Pamela May was ship-shape for its Royal passenger and lent a hand on the day to welcome the Earl.

Waterways Trust chairman, Coun Pam Davey said: “We are carrying on the good work of all those volunteers who made the opening of the canals possible and we are very proud to have been chosen to play a part in the visit of the Earl of Wessex to Droitwich Spa.”

Following his trip on the Pamela May, the Earl was welcomed into Droitwich’s High Street which was devastated by floods in 2007.

While there, he visited the town’s popular Youth Zone where he met youngsters and learned more about the services offered.

Once back on the High Street, the Earl spent time talking to local traders who he first met during his first visit in 2008 and discovered how the town had bounced back.
