Rugby Union
Droitwich crash at Newbold

By Jamie Arrowsmith 21/12 Updated: 29/12 12:16

DROITWICH allowed a strong half time position to fall away at Newbold on Saturday as they suffered a 24-14 Midlands Two West (South) defeat.

The visitors kicked possession away too often in the early exchanges and as a result came under considerable pressure from Newbold who made them pay when sending a penalty through the posts.

Gradually Spa got into their rhythm though and after a patient build up the forwards drove Luke Eversham over for the first try of the afternoon, Bobby Scott-Walker added the extras.

Now playing with confidence, Droitwich started to dominate and from a shortened line-out just inside Newbold’s half they recycled the ball quickly, moving it through several pairs of hands for Matt Barnes to cross in the far corner, Scott-Walker converted again to give Spa a 14-3 half time lead.

Droitwich started the second half with less intensity and patience, opting to kick and chase rather take the contact and recycle.

This was giving Newbold more possession and the opportunity to counter and strong running from deep by Tom Lloyd set up Phil Read for his first try, Bond converted.

Spa were then dealt a further blow when Scott-Walker was sent to the sin-bin for criticising the referee and that left the visitors exposed in midfield, resulting in another converted try by Tom Clarke.

Sean Fereday completed the scoring for the hosts when gathering a loose ball and going in under the posts, Bond added the extra two points.
